While Gays Celebrate, Christofascist Go Berserk

Ever since this morning when the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it was not granting certiorari in any of the gay marriage case appeals, gays have been celebrating - even in states that are not within the 4th, 7th or 10th Circuits - the Christofascists and have been in spittle flecked convulsions and general conniption fits.  Some of the gay haters are distraught over today's events since they make their livelihood peddling hate and supporting discrimination against LGBT people for their failure to adhere to the Christofascists' sick, hate and fear driven religious beliefs.  Others, however, in my view and some others is motivated by their own sick neurosis and desperate desire not to have to think or face the reality that the belief system may be based on myths and fairy tales.    At Breitbart we saw suggestions made that today's action was part of a plot by the U.S. Supreme Court.  Here's a snippet:

Challenges to pro-same-sex marriage rulings in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin have been rejected, placing all of those states on notice that they must begin issuing marriage licenses to two men or two women.

The Court clearly wants to wait until a majority of states have been forced to embrace same-sex marriage by lower-level appeals courts. Then they can determine that a “trend-line” has been established, suggest that society has “evolved,” and declare that a new standard must be enshrined. That, of course, was the logic of Lawrence v. Texas (2003), in which the Court waited 17 years to overrule Bowers v. Hardwick (1986), stating that anal penetration was a hard-fought Constitutional right; the Court in that case stated that Bowers no longer applied because of “an emerging awareness that liberty gives substantial protection to adult persons in deciding how to conduct their private lives in matters pertaining to sex.”
Closer to home here in Virginia, as the Richmond Times Dispatch reports, the always foul Victoria Cobb refused to admit defeat and said that The Family Foundation, a hate group in all but formal designation, would continue to "fight" until the Supreme Court hands down a final ruling.  Cobb, of course, has not held a real job for many years and obviously wants the simple minded and gullible to continue to fund  her comfortable life style:
“There are still multiple cases, including those in the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 11th circuits, working their way to the Supreme Court. The issue of the legal definition of marriage is far from settled, and should be decided by the people, and not the courts. . . . . we will work with the General Assembly to ensure that while same-sex marriage is legal in Virginia the rights and freedoms of those who disagree with the redefinition of marriage are treated equally and are not discriminated against in their religious practice, education, business or employment.”
In short, in addition to wanting to keep her income flowing, Cobb is fearful now that she and her fellow religious extremists might find themselves treated the way they have treated others for so long.

But there is another explanation noted by blogger friend Bob Felton who commented on a post on this blog about the Christofascists contempt for knowledge and intellect.  Here is the spot  on analysis:
Michael Hamar points toward a piece that reprises a familiar idea hereabouts:
Intellectualism invites the constant assessment of the “correctness” of a person’s belief system. That’s dangerous ground for a fundamentalist Christian. When you confront them on a particular belief you are not only confronting them on an idea that they have held to more rigidly for a longer time than most other folks but you are confronting the very core of who they understand themselves to be.
It isn’t merely an idea or set of factual claims that are at issue, but the believer’s very identity and worth as a human being. This is why I believe that many evangelicals aren’t interested in ‘saving’ anybody; what they’re really interested in is assurance from one more person that they’ve got it right, that they aren’t the hopeless screw-ups that they suspect themselves of being.
The more gays marry and become "main stream," the more the Christofascists will be challenged to question - if not admit - that  their entire world view may indeed be false.  For some, having to think and realize that they have been fed lies all their lives is more than they can handle. That and facing their own hypocrisy, of course.

That graphic--perfect!
My mother was actually married to my father until his death and they were together more than 50 years. However, she adheres to the old "marriage is between a man and a woman" song and dance. She isn't as outright hateful as some. Her take is "it's okay if they want to live together, but what they're doing isn't really marriage."
I'm sorry to say that I can't muster the wherewithal to argue with her, and nor can my son, even though we both think she's wrong. We're not going to change her mind, so we just roll our eyes and don't say anything. Closed minds are tiring. Hopefully as time passes more minds will open along the way. Keep telling it like it is.
