New York City - Day 3

We had a wonderful day yesterday with one of the highlights being a trip to Governor's Island after a visit to the World Trade Center Memorial.  The day was absolutely perfect with low humidity and highs in the upper 70's.  After taking the free ferry to the island we rented bicycles and rode around the island.  Our friend who is traveling with us spent part of his childhood on the island during the period in the 1960's when it was a U.S. Army facility.  Thus, we had our own private guide.   The City of New York is demolishing the non-historic buildings on the island in order to create a large park that should be complete next year.  I highly recommend a visit to the island - the views are amazing such as the one above that show the new World Trade buildings under construction as well as the views of Liberty Island.

Dinner was at a great Spanish restaurant in the West Village and then we walked around enjoying the beautiful evening and the upbeat, progressive atmosphere.  We fly back to Norfolk - and backwardness and state sponsored anti-gay bigotry - this evening.  Yep, you guessed it.  I'm less than thrilled at the prospect.
