Quote of the Day: Bob Felton on Benedict XVI's Growing Irrelevance

As regular readers know full well, I have only contempt and disgust towards most of the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy which is thoroughly bankrupt when it comes to any shred of morality and simple human decency. Yet despite the documented cover ups of the sexual abuse of children and youths orchestrated from the Vatican on down, many in the Catholic Church laity continue to grovel before and fund what can only be described as a criminal enterprise. North Carolina blogger Bob Felton reacts to Pope Benedict's claim that gay marriage threatens the "future of humanity":

As the Vatican copes with yet another set of revelations of widespread child sex abuse — this time in the Netherlands — Pope Benedict solemnly warns that same-sex marriage threatens the survival of humanity.

Not one word, apparently, about the hundreds of thousands of children sexually abused by the church’s clergy, or the subsequent and well-documented global criminal cover-up.

A very great many men enter clerical careers as self-therapy, as a device for suppressing their own sexual discomforts, and there is a well-documented concentration of sexually troubled men amongst the Catholic clergy. I’m only thinking out loud, but I wonder: Could the Church’s preoccupation with this issue be a reflection of its clergy’s own inhibitions and, worse, forebode continued shrinkage of its ranks?

Does Benedict look into the future, that is, and fear for his Church when he realizes that sexual suppression might no longer drive the uneasy toward a life of asceticism? . . . Considered that way, same-sex marriage is not a threat to the Church’s claims of moral sovereignty but, as the closet empties, to its very survival. I don’t know whether that’s right or not, but it sure explains their weird, other worldly, un-self awareness better than anything that Benedict has ever said.

Bob may be onto something with this analysis. It explains the Church hierarchy's anti-gay hysteria as well as anything else.
