Opponents of DC Marriage Equality Make Last Ditch Pitch to Supreme Court

The foes of civil marriage equality just seem to never give up their effort to put the rights of others up for popular vote. As I said when Proposition 8 was upheld, it is an extremely dangerous precedent for civil rights to depend upon the whims of a majority. In fact, it makes a mockery of the concept of equal protection under the law and ultimately puts the rights of all minority groups at risk of falling to a lynch mob minded majority. Now, the gay haters opposing Washington, D.C.'s new gay marriage laws have made a last ditch filing with the U.S. Supreme Court asking that civil rights be put up for vote. The irony is that some of the moving parties behind the filing are blacks - if any group ought to be fearful of having minority rights put on the ballot one would think it would be blacks who for so many years were subjugated based on the will of a bigoted majority. Personally, I want same sex civil marriage in the District because, besides being the right thing, I believe it will over time put great pressure on the Virginia General Assembly to drag its discriminatory sorry ass into the 21st century and adopt civil protections for LGBT Virginians. Here are some highlights from HRC's Back Story:

Having exhausted just about every legal avenue to stop loving, committed couples in the District of Columbia from being able to marry, opponents of equal marriage have reportedly filed an 11th hour appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court asking the Justices to halt Wednesday’s issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The AP reports:
*
Opponents of gay marriage are asking the Supreme Court to put a hold on the District of Columbia’s new law allowing same-sex couples to wed.
*
The new law, passed in December, is supposed to take effect Wednesday. Court papers filed Monday with Chief Justice John Roberts argue that Washington residents should be able to vote on the matter. Local courts have rejected the opponents’ arguments.

With all the needy in the world, the homophobes continue to squander millions of dollars seeking to deprive others of civil legal rights. It is a sad commentary on the priorities of these false Christians.
