Alabama Insanity Alert

I've commented before about my years in Alabama right out of law school and my belief that the state has lurched way further to the Neanderthal far right than when I lived there. To further prove my point, Alabama state representative Jay Love of Montgomery pictured at left - no doubt either a shameless opportunists pandering to far right voters or a self-hating closet case (or both) - has introduced a resolution in the Alabama Legislature which supports Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean, who was criticized for saying she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman and who now blames her loss of the Miss USA crown on the judges critical of her religious views. With all of the problems facing Alabama which typically ranks near the bottom of almost all categories, this is the type of crap Love wants to waste time over. Alabama is a beautiful state and could be a fabulous place to live and relocate businesses to but for the increasing crazy loons such as Mr. Love (and all of the Republicans in the Legislature) who scare away anyone with a shred of progressive thinking and a belief in the separation of church and state. Hopefully, some day the general population of the state will wake up to just how badly their long term interests have been served by Christianists like Love. Here are some highlights from the Montgomery Observer:
*
State Rep. Jay Love, R-Montgomery, has drafted a resolution supporting Miss California USA, who was criticized for saying she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Miss California Carrie Prejean was asked during the Miss USA 2009 Pageant on Sunday if she supported legalizing gay marriage. Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who is gay and was a judge at the competition, asked the question.
*
Some people have criticized her for the comments. Love said there are those "telling people what they can believe and what they can say," which he said is wrong. He said she is being punished for saying marriage is between a man and a woman. "I don't believe that's right," Love said.
*
The former Republican congressional nominee for the 2nd Congressional District said he supports Prejean for standing by her beliefs and not giving the politically correct answer. Every member of the House Republican Caucus and some Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors to the bill, which was introduced Tuesday.
*
State Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, said the said the resolution would not pass. He said Prejean is associated with right-wing organizations in California and said she supports discrimination. "I am not for the Alabama Legislature honoring her in any kind of way," Holmes said.
