Gay Gold Medal

Hurrah!! Matthew Mitcham, Australian Olympic diver and the only out gay man at the Beijing Games won a gold medal for Australia in the men’s 10 metre platform diving in Beijing. The 20-year-old offered an incredible 112.10 final dive to beat the Chinese Luxin Zhou who had lead the competition until that point.

I watched the diving this afternoon and the chap who actually invented the dive he won Gold with said it was executed to perfection, he'd never seen anything like it before.

The Aussies are known to be a bit macho and homophobic so here's hoping Matthew's Gold medal goes someway to pushing prejudices aside.

I know nothing about diving but when he made contact with the water at the end of the dive I actually said "Whoa! Great dive!"

Did you see it? It was magnificent. I didn't know he was gay though until I came here and read this post. Good on him.
