City of God: Wingnut (Catholic Florida) Town Opens

Ave Maria is a new Florida town built on strict Catholic values (ABC News): In the wake of the Los Angeles Archdiocese sex abuse settlement, one cannot help but wonder what "strict Catholic values" might encompass: pedophile priests free to prey on children; corrupt, dishonest bishops and cardinals who engage in cover ups across the globe to maintain appearances; priests and axillary bishops visiting the families of victims to brow beat them into silence.

If these are "Catholic values," God help the residents of Ave Maria. Sex in the City will seem down right dull and chaste compared to what will go on in Ave Maria if the conduct of the Church hierarchy sets the tone as opposed to the values to which it gives lip service. If it's the latter, I feel particular sorrow for any gay kids that have the misfortune to live in Ave Maria. They will be indoctrinated with self-hate, be told that God can "cure" them and any number of false information. The only positive is that maybe the parents will all follow some future command of Benedict XVI to drink poison laced Kool-Aid. Here's ABC's description of the new "city":

Ave Maria is a refuge of sorts for Christian values in a secular age. It opens its gates to the public for the first time on Saturday. It is the brainchild of Dominos Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, who built the town as part of his life-long dream. The staunch Catholic envisioned a community that would draw residents who shared his Catholic values.
"I put basically everything I had into it, not only my money, but the rest of my life," Monaghan said. The town is centered around an 1,100-seat Roman Catholic church and a traditional Catholic university. No adult book stores or strip clubs adorn the town, and local businesses are urged not to sell contraceptives or birth control.

But some civil libertarians are raising objections to this modern-day city of God. "It is too early to tell from the facts whether there is a constitutional violation, but we're mindful and alert," said Rebecca Harrison Steele of the American Civil Liberties Union. The founders insist the town is open for any one to reside in. Monaghan has said his goal is to help as many people as possible get to Heaven. And he hopes these homeowners will have a head start.

I don't know about you, but I will hence forth make a point to NEVER eat anything from Domino Pizza so as to in any way lend financial support to Monaghan's theocratic endeavor. The guy is obviously a nut case. The Puritans tried this approach and it failed. Oops, I forgot that Christianist don't learn real history.

I saw this on the news. They interviewed one nutcase who said he has moved his family there because of the "shared morals and values". When asked how he would feel if a gay/lesbian couple moved to this community, he said flat out with no hesitation "I'D MOVE AGAIN !!!!" So much for Loving Your Fellow Man as the Good Lord told us.
