Poland's Homophobic Bigotry

365gay.com has a report on the European Union’s reaction to Poland’s increasingly rabid homophobia and proposed anti-gay legislation:

(Warsaw) The European Union's watchdog for human rights hammered the Polish government on Friday or what he called an abysmal record in the treatment of gays and lesbians.

Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg presented Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski with a failing grade in a human rights performance report.

Afterwards Hammarberg told reporters that the country has a homophobia problem and the government needs to tone down the rhetoric. "I think we should remember that one of the groups that were targeted by the Nazis were homosexuals.

Meanwhile, the Catholic News Service is reporting positively on Poland's homophobic behavior. Of course this is the same institution that had bishops colaborating with the Communist secret police in Poland.
Personally, I believe the EU needs to back more back bone. The more recently admitted countries like Poland should be told in very blunt terms that either they comply with the EU's standards regarding human rights, or they will be expelled from the EU. Bullies and bigots sadly only understand action, not talk.
